June 1st marks the start of hurricane season, and experts predict a very busy season this year. Last year we saw some major storms, most notably Hurricane Sandy, and it’s possible that we may see similar storms ravage the East Coast.
Still Salty About Sandy?
After seeing the destruction of last October’s Hurricane Sandy, many people fear a similar storm will destroy their homes and other property. Although the experts say another storm like Sandy is unlikely, impacts such as storm surge, strong winds and heavy rain are possible as far as a few hundred miles from a storm. A storm like Sandy was a rare occurrence, but its impact could be felt up and down the Atlantic coast. Even seven months later, there are still many buildings and houses that are damaged and need repairing.
What to Expect this Summer
This summer, hurricane experts predict less storms but more powerful ones; especially on the southern Atlantic Coast. As these storms work their way north, we can expect to see heavier storms than usual. Heavy rainfall can also cause severe flooding, which can be just as frustrating as external damage to the home. And with a predicted 16 hurricanes this season (4 extreme ones), it’s very likely that we will see heavy storms as a result. But don’t count out another major East Coast hit! Hurricane development is like every other aspect of weather; it’s unpredictable. So what can you do to protect yourself from these storms?
-If your home is prone to flooding, secure basement windows and check sump pump for any malfunctions.
-Bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans, and anything else that is not tied down.
-Don’t wait until after the storm hits to buy a generator!
-Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
-Determine how and where to secure your boat.
-Lock all doors and windows—including garage.
-And most importantly, personal safety comes first!
